Manipulator Arm
Alvin is fitted with two jettisonable, hydraulically powered robotic arms called “manipulators” that have clawed “hands” for deploying scientific equipment and collecting marine organisms. A new robotic arm was installed in 2006.

The starboard manipulator can be fitted with a hydraulic actuator that can be used as a trigger mechanism to operate devices held by the hand. It has a maximum extension of 69 inches and a lift capacity of 100 pounds at maximum extension.
The port manipulator, shown here, is even more maneuverable than the starboard unit. Its maximum extension is 74 inches, with a fully extended lift capacity of 150 pounds.
