Gina Perovich, who received her graduate degree from the University of Delaware College of Marine & Studies, sits next to one of three viewports that are set at different points in Alvin’s hull. Each porthole, or “port,” is 3.5 inches thick with a 5-inch inside diameter and a 12-inch outside diameter. A fourth, smaller viewport is located in the hatch.
