With the outer skins of the sub off, Mark Drewery, one of Alvin’s technicians, checks the sub’s electrical and hydraulic systems. The large metal housings at the left edge of the photo contain Alvin’s motor controllers. All the red and yellow tubing contains electrical wires that are surrounded by oil to protect them from the great pressure of the deep-sea floor.
