Once the R/V Atlantis arrives at the location starred above in the Pacific Ocean (9°40' N latitude, 104°16' W longitude), members of the Extreme 2008 research team will begin daily dives in the submersible Alvin to hydrothermal vents over a mile deep on the ocean floor.
