Atlantis is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the oceanographic community under a charter agreement with the U.S. Office of Naval Research.

The 83-meter (274-ft) vessel is part of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet. The ship is equipped to support the U.S. National Deep Submergence facility, which includes the submersible Alvin, remotely operated vehicle Jason/Medea, the Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE), and towed vehicles.

The ship carries a complement of 36 crew members, technicians, and deep submergence group members and 24 scientists. It features a dynamic positioning system, hangars for Alvin and Jason, scientific and computer laboratories, a fully equipped machine shop, library, laundry, and two 5.4-meter rigid-hull inflatable rescue/work boats.
