Welcome to Extreme 2008: A Deep-Sea Adventure!
Classroom Registration Form

Presented by the University of Delaware with support from the National Science Foundation

""From November 10–30, 2008, scientists from the University of Delaware will lead an international research team on Extreme 2008: A Deep-Sea Adventure a 21-day expedition to explore hydrothermal vent sites in the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortés). The research team will include scientists and graduate students from the University of Delaware, University of Southern California, J. Craig Venter Institute, University of Colorado, University of North Carolina, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico and the University of Waikato, New Zealand.

Teachers and their classes (recommended for grades 6 –12) are invited to participate in this unique educational experience via an award-winning interactive Web site, online curriculum, downloadable full-color study guide and evaluation. Highlighting the program will be a conference phone call between selected classrooms and scientists working aboard Alvin, the famous submersible.

""Alvin is an untethered submersible (no cable from the mother ship). Thus, live undersea video from the submersible is not possible. However, a satellite phone link is possible, and your students may have the opportunity to participate in a conference call with the scientists as they work 3,000 meters down, collecting samples and running experiments. A total of 50 schools (12-13 different schools on 4 different days) will be invited to participate in the “Phone Call to the Deep,” linking classrooms in a 45-minute conference call with scientists working aboard the research vessel Atlantis and submersible Alvin.

The Web site will contain basic information about the expedition and hydrothermal vents — from biographies on the science team to a closeup look at vent life, with a special focus on viruses and protists. The site also will include information posted daily from the scientists at sea, including blogs, dive logs, interviews with crew, and video clips from the submersible Alvin. Students will be able to submit questions to the scientists in "Write the Scientists," design experiments in "Extreme Experiments" (a selected number will be chosen by the scientists and conducted at sea) and work on entries for a "Virtual Science Fair."

This is the sixth program in the University of Delaware's award-winning Extreme series. We look forward to welcoming you and your students aboard to experience the nature of science firsthand, interact with marine scientists and learn about Earth’s last true frontier — the ocean!

Please note: All program materials--including participation in the Phone Call to the Deep (if your classroom is selected)--are free!

Create Your User Profile

The first step in our registration process is to create a user profile. This profile will enable you to easily access and update your registration information as needed in the future — for example, if the number of students in your classroom changes. Your user profile also will enable you to access the Extreme 2008 Teacher's Corner, with its wealth of resource materials, when it opens in November.
