Welcome to the Virtual Science Fair! This is where we invite all Extreme 2008 participating classrooms to submit their deep-sea work (group or individual projects) in one of three categories: Vent Science, Vent Art, and Vent Poetry — with separate competitions for middle school and high school students.

All Vent Science and Vent Art entries will be judged by Chief Scientist Dr. Cary and members of the Extreme 2008 science team when they return from sea. Prizes will be awarded for the best projects in each category. You'll hear more about the Vent Poetry competition from Karen Romano Young, our shipboard education coordinators, once the expedition gets under way, so please be sure to read her Daily Journals. Did your class develop a great science project as a result of Extreme 2008? Did you conduct an experiment, research a neat topic, and report your results in a scientific poster?

See what EXTREME projects have been created for 2008!

The Granville High School Biology Class

The sophomore Biology class from the Granville High School in Granville, ND, USA is pleased to present our “Deep Seascape”.  The class has created a hand-made, 3D version of a vent site.  Since we were leading into adaptations, mutations, and evolution, they opted to have a site that had both real and created organisms based on adaptations we have been studying.  A book of photos with fact pages was put together to detail all of the organisms in the seascape.  This served as a quiz of sorts for students of other classes to test their knowledge on the organisms of the deep sea.

The entire class has enjoyed the opportunity to partake in this deep-sea adventure.  Being that our school is literally located just 20 miles to the west of the geographic center of North America, this may be the closest that many of these kids will ever come to the ocean let alone the deep-sea.  Thank you for the opportunity!  It has been a fantastic ride!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tina Webb

Wisconsin

Ms. Beverly Pierson, who teaches high school Oceanography-Meteorology Classes at Memorial High School in Eau Claire, WI, sent us these pictures of their Deep Sea Mural. Fantastic work everybody, it really gives the impression of going deep underwater. Thanks for sharing it with us!

The Memorial High School Oceanography-Meteorology Class

The Memorial High School Oceanography-Meteorology class created a deep sea mural outside of their classroom. The entire class was assigned a deep sea or hydrothermal vent organism to research and to create a small informational poster. The mural project leaders, painted the hallway outside of our classroom in dark blues/blacks to represent the deep sea. They used the classes’ informational posters to create and paint larger versions of the organisms as well as hydrothermal vents (both a white and a black smoker) and the organisms that live around the vents. The tube worms were created out of white pipe cleaners dipped in red paint and the football fish and the black devil angler fish each have reflected aluminum foil to represent their bioluminescent “lures”.

As you enter the mural hallway it slowly gets colder and darker the farther you move along the hallway. The temperature was totally by accident as we blocked off air flow but it definitely added to the effect.

There will be two separate competitions for middle-school students (grades 6-8) and high-school students (grades 9-12). Karen Romano Young, one of our shipboard education coordinators for Extreme 2008, will choose among the first 50 entries (for each group) that she receives between Mon. and Sun. of each week, starting Nov. 30. She will select a 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place winner and post them on the Web site each Mon. for those entries received the week prior. For example, on Mon., Dec. 6, she will post the winners selected from all entries received between the start of the expedition on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and Sun., Dec. 5. At the end of the cruise, as part of the Virtual Science Fair, the grand-prize winner will be chosen from the three weekly winners.

As an example of how to format your entry, we have included an old poem that Letise Houser, last year's shipboard education coordinator, wrote on a research cruise:

Name (Grade): Letise T. Houser (3rd year Ph.D.)
Teacher: Dr. Charles Epifanio
School (City, State): University of Delaware College of Marine Studies (Lewes, DE)

Eyes Eyes watching . . . the sky has eyes And they watch us as we stare back as if In a two-way mirror We admire the blazing sun with its rise and its set We gawk at the full orange moon And the patterns the clouds seem to make in our minds But the whole time . . . Imagine that -- the entire time We are unaware or unbelieving that the sky's rays Pierce more than just our skin They see our souls flirt with the swells of the ocean And lick salty kisses from our lips
